Getting your child ready for daycare: a gentle two-week plan

October 10, 2026 · 5 min read · Little Otters Daycare

Starting daycare is a big change for a little person, and for parents too. Tears at drop-off are normal and usually short-lived. A bit of preparation in the two weeks before the first day can make the transition smoother.

Two weeks before

  • Talk about it simply and positively. "At daycare you'll play with toys and friends, then Mommy or Daddy will pick you up."
  • Read stories about starting daycare. Picture books help children name their feelings.
  • Visit together if you can. Seeing the rooms and meeting an educator once makes the first day less new. Our virtual tour is a good warm-up.
  • Shift sleep and meal times gradually toward the daycare routine.

One week before

  • Practise short separations with a grandparent or friend, always saying goodbye and coming back when you said you would.
  • Label everything: clothes, shoes, bottles, blankets.
  • Choose a comfort item from home, like a small blanket or soft toy, if the centre allows it.
  • Get your paperwork done early so the first morning isn't rushed. Our enrolment guide lists what's usually needed.

The first days

  • Keep goodbyes short and warm. A hug, a "see you after snack", then go. Lingering usually makes it harder.
  • Never sneak out. It can make children more anxious the next day.
  • Start with shorter days if your schedule allows.
  • Ask for an update. Most children settle within minutes of a parent leaving, and knowing that helps you too. At Little Otters, you'll get updates through the Lillio app.

When to talk to the educators

If your child is still very upset after two or three weeks, isn't eating or sleeping, or something just feels off, talk to their educators. They see your child every day and will work with you on a plan.

Come and see it for yourself.

A tour is the best way to choose a daycare. Walk the rooms, meet the team and ask anything. It takes about 20 minutes.
